Usually, I was allowed to wear just ONE outfit for each episode (and we filmed for a week at each location 🤭) for continuity (my least favourite word while filming 😂) so when we were filming here at @newbyhallandgardens and they told me I needed THREE OUTFITS!!! I was over the moon! OMG!!! And first dress photo here is second-hand vintage found by my stylist @ruth_recommends

For me, compassion is the key to a meaningful life and during the lockdown, I completed my certification in Compassion Cultivation Training - a compassion-based education programme developed at Stanford University.

Have I made my life purposeful? Have I been loved? Have I loved and cared for others? Have I touched others’ lives in meaningful ways? Have I brought joy into the lives of others? Has my existence mattered to other people’s well-being? These are the questions that will occupy our mind as we approach our end.

In any case, these are the questions that should matter to us as human beings, whose happiness and suffering are defined by our relationship with others. ADVENTURES in NESTOR-LAND (my 13 year old son) now on Stories and in Highlights 👀where we hiked from one end of @mapperton_estate to the other supposedly only to take 2 hours.... Um, I don’t think so Nestor.... But he did teach me a new word: BOGGY - which is now my favourite word. He made a brilliant fire 🔥 from scratch, soup was heated, the rain fell and we cheers-ed our mugs together.👩‍👦

‘Since lockdown began, all the family have been working frantically, doing the jobs of the regular staff of 12, trying to remedy some of the financial repercussions of coronavirus, which has walloped not only Mapperton, but the majority of our historic houses, many of which are on the verge of being lost not only to the families who have occupied them for generations, but also to the nation.
A survey by @historic_houses at the end of March revealed that 53% of our stately homes would not be able to continue operating if closed for 3 to 4 months. If lockdown stretches to 5 or 6 months the figure would rise to 75%. She’s more enthusiastic about presenting ‘An American Aristocrat’s Guide to Great Estates’, detailing the travails of great estates even before the present crisis, which is a huge hit on the Smithsonian Channel, earning her a devoted US fanbase.

Now, she’s putting her experience to new use by presenting weekly online tours of Mapperton accompanied alternately by the Earl and Countess. “It’s entirely a family affair: Luke does the filming, our 13-year-old son, Nestor, does the sound recording, and people love it because it’s so personal,” Julie says. “We’ll show an old Tudor door hidden behind Georgian panelling and say, ‘This used to be Nestor’s favourite hiding spot,’ and the camera will swing to Nestor, who’ll say, ‘Yes, it was!’ ”

People from as far as South Africa, Australia and all over the US have been tuning in to the show’s live YouTube feed and bombarding the aristocrats with questions, often about the house’s square footage or wanting to know what was in the first sandwich (“We think roast beef, but we can’t be sure”). Many viewers respond to Julie’s request for donations by giving generously. “The money’s not enough to turn around the situation, but it all helps.” “I know I’m very lucky to be here, but I’ve never been so shattered in my life — and I was shattered before,” she says. “Until lockdown I’d never appreciated what goes into running this house. People think living here is like something from a fairytale when it’s nothing like that at all.’

WE ARE OPEN!!! 🌸 After 11 weeks of closure, we are pleased to announce that, following an update to the Government guidance, @mapperton_estate will REOPEN our gardens to visitors from today, Sunday 7th June.
.
In common with other historic houses this year, Mapperton has lost all visitor income which normally supports the significant cost of running and maintaining this historic house and gardens. However, thanks to the hard work of our gardening team and my mother-in-law, the gardens are looking wonderful and should provide a haven of calm and beauty during this challenging time.
.
We will open every Sunday - Thursday from 11am to 5pm and we very much look forward to welcoming you back to enjoy the gardens throughout the summer.
.
The House and the Coach House Café will unfortunately not be open at this stage, though we will keep this under review. However you can always join our free LIVE stream house tours on Tuesdays 4pm at mapperton.com/live.
